THE WINNING FORMULA
Four wheel drive cars have existed for quite some time, the technology as patented in 1893 in fact. This drive-train has also been extensively used in F1 and other race series until it was banned, and subsequently allowed for the World Rally Championship. Audi grabbed this opportunity and were the first to make this formula work with great success! Initially the configuration of this transmission was shared between the road car and the rally device, although throughout 6 years of Audi's racing campaign 7 different drive-train configurations were used, sometimes changed between stages or drivers. Despite a relatively short time in the WRC arena, Audi made a profound impact on what the sport would go on to look like and how this would mold all future top tier cars and regulations.
