The Toyota GT-One, also known as codename TS020, was a racing car developed for top tier endurance racing, initially GT1 (therefore the name) and later adapted to a Le Mans prototype LMGTP class car. After the success of the Supra LM and the SARD MC8-R in GT racing, Toyota decided to campaign a new GT car for Le Mans for 1998 (the SARD MC8-R failed to qualify in 1997). The car was developed by TTE (Toyota Team Europe) and Dallara. With a one year hiatus between racing, TTE was able to spend time studying its competitors and how they worked around the rules. TTE not ones to shy away from bending the rules (remember the cheating turbo trick on the Celica?), came up with a way to twist the rule that required enough space to carry a suitcase, this was accomplished by convincing the governing body that a suitcase would theoretically fit in the empty fuel tank.
Toyota only built two road going versions, both used for display. Powered by its prior Group C R36V engine, the GT-One entered pop culture with its appearance in Gran Turismo 2. Curiously in Gran Turismo 2 & 3 the TS020 sported #1 numbering which it only wore for the Le Mans Fuji 1000 Km race, as, unfortunately, the GT-One never won a race. As history will show, Toyota gave up on endurance racing and TTE went on to new heights in Formula 1.
